Lists and procedures
Lists are a great way of making a series of events easy to read. Keep a consistent structure when writing vertical lists. If the list becomes too long then use a table.
- Only use numbered lists if describing steps.
- Use a separate numbered entry for each step, although small steps that take place within the same part of the UI can go together.
- Most of the time, include actions that finalize a step, such as OK or Apply buttons.
- Use complete sentences.
- Use imperative verb forms.
- Limit a procedure to 10 steps when possible.
If all list elements are short phrases (three words or fewer), don’t end them with periods, even if they form a complete sentence together with the list introduction.
